Centerless grinding is a unique machining process. A grinding wheel and a control (feed) wheel utilizing the correct set up parameters produce the required stock removal and finish for bar grinding and related applications.
Centerless grinding has no spindle or fixture to secure the workpiece. Instead, the workpiece is secured between two rotary grinding wheels a stationary wheel (grinding wheel), and moving wheel (regulating wheel). The speed of these wheels determines the rate of stock removed per pass from the workpiece.
Bar Grinding. By definition, centerless grinding is production cylindrical work in which centers are replaced by a work-supporting member and two abrasive wheels one of which grinds work while the other regulates the speed of its rotation.

Longer Wheel Life. The best quantification of wheel life is the grinding ratio, or G-ratio. This specification is a measure of the amount of material removed as compared with the amount of wear of the wheel (refer to equation below).

Two wheels are used. The larger one is used to grind the surface of the workpiece and the smaller wheel is used to regulate the axial movement of the workpiece. Types of centerless grinding include through-feed grinding, in-feed/plunge grinding, and internal centerless grinding.
Centerless grinding wheels also have their wheel type specified, such as 01, 05, and 07, which indicates the type of regulating wheel it fits onto. A centerless grinding wheel will also have its diameter, thickness, and hole size indicated.
Centerless grinding uses purpose-built centerless grinding machines. Such a machine will always include the grinding wheel, regulating wheel, and some means of supporting a workpiece. Modern machines may involve computer numerical control to allow automation and improve precision.
